Costume Contacts: How Prescription Verification Works

Short version: U.S. law requires a valid contact lens prescription for every contact lens sold, including cosmetic and Halloween lenses that don't correct vision. You give us your eye doctor's name and phone number, we verify it with their office, and your order ships, usually within one business day.

Why we ask

Contact lenses, even plain cosmetic ones, are medical devices regulated by the FDA. The federal Contact Lens Rule requires sellers to verify a prescription before shipping. A lens that doesn't fit your eye can scratch the cornea or cause an infection, which is why an eye doctor needs to have looked at your eyes first. We can't make exceptions, and neither can any other legitimate seller.

What happens when you order online

1. At checkout you enter your eye doctor's name, phone number, and state, and confirm you understand the prescription requirement.
2. We contact your doctor's office to verify your prescription. By law they have up to 8 business hours to respond. If they don't respond in that window, the prescription is treated as verified and we ship.
3. Your order ships as soon as verification is complete, usually within one business day. Local pickup orders are marked ready at the same point.
4. If your prescription has expired or can't be verified, we email you right away with options to renew. You'll have three business days to send us a current prescription before the order is cancelled and refunded in full.

Don't have a current prescription?

A contact lens prescription is different from a glasses prescription and expires after one to two years depending on your state. If yours has lapsed:

• Renew online in about 15 minutes at 1-800 Contacts ExpressExam (you'll need a previous prescription to renew this way).
• Local to Fort Collins? We recommend Edge Optics. Tell them you need a contact lens exam for cosmetic lenses; they do this all the time.

Buying in store or by phone

Bring your eye doctor's name and phone number, or a copy of your prescription, and we'll take care of the verification at the counter. If you'd rather have it done before you come in, you can submit it yourself through Online RX Review: enter your contact details exactly as they appear on your order, add your doctor's information, and under "Send a Copy To?" enter The Life of the Party and info@lifeofthepartystore.com so the verification reaches us.
