When you’re looking for Halloween costume ideas and you’re less than excited about costumes that only involve your clothing, you may be wondering about creating whole-body looks or adding a challenge to your costume for the year. If that’s the case, special effects makeup, also known as SFX, can be a great way to shake up your costume game and create a detailed, fun costume that you and your friends will love! At The Life of the Party, we have a wide range of makeup and SFX items that are designed to help you create all kinds of out-of-this-world looks and costumes. Here are five of our favorite types of looks to create using SFX!

The Undead

Halloween tends to be about all things spooky, scary, and creepy, so why not play into that theme by becoming an undead creature for the holiday? If you’re interested in becoming a beautiful but terrifying vampire, we have everything you need. From vampire ears, to bite mark transfers, to Tooth FX, and, of course, fangs, you can create your own vampire look in no time. If you’d prefer something a bit more scary or gory, you might want to try becoming a zombie! Use SFX items like Zombie Blood, bite mark transfers, and deathly makeup colors to create a truly haunting look that will spook your friends and loved ones!

Mythical Creatures

While spooky and scary costumes can be fun, not everyone enjoys being scary for Halloween! If you’d prefer to dress up as a beloved mythical creature, you absolutely should! Become a beautiful, ethereal unicorn with your very own horn, colorful glitter spray, and bright hairspray colors! Complete your look with costume contacts (be sure to have your contact prescription handy) and some show-stopping lashes, too! If you’re more of a mermaid fan, you can create a fun and realistic look with gill transfers, luxe powder brushed over fishnets to create a scaly makeup effect, and face jewels to add some glam!

Gory Injuries

If you’re not feeling excited about becoming a creature, there are still many options for SFX makeup that are simply fun and challenging to create! Whether you’re looking to test your skills in creating bruises, cuts, scars, and wounds or you’re trying to create a gory, scary look that’ll haunt everyone at the Halloween party, we’ve got what you need! Browse the wide selection of FX transfers that depict scars, scratches, stab wounds, and veins to get easy-to-apply wounds that already look realistic. Otherwise, you can create your own gory looks using items like thick fake blood, simulated bone wax, makeup wheels designed to help create fake bruises and injuries, and even fake scarring liquid.

Demons and Goblins

Classic scary characters that are also fun and easy to create are demons or demonic creatures like goblins and more. Create a realistic demonic look this Halloween with small horn transfers, makeup wheels in reds and browns, and even face jewels to add a bit of glamour to your look! If you’re going more for spooky than glamorous, you can always add in teeth, fake blood, and contacts to really make your scary look pop. One popular demonic-type costume we’ve seen created with SFX makeup is the character Vecna from Stranger Things. Use tin foil or plastic wrap to create the character’s tentacle-like appearance on your neck, wear a bald cap over your hair, and add details, scarring, and color with a mixture of body paint, liquid latex, and nose and scar waxes.
