When you’re creating a cosplay look for a particular event, there are many ways to achieve the look you’re going for. From clothing pieces to accessories and little details, getting your cosplay just right can take a lot of work! But what about the hair? If you either can’t or won’t dye or change your own hair, you’ll likely need to create your character’s look using a wig. At The Life of the Party, we’re proud to be your source for cosplay materials and we carry a huge selection of wigs in all styles, lengths, colors, and for all budgets. In this article, we’ll discuss how to choose the right wig for your cosplay and how to care for that wig, too.

Decide on a Style
First and foremost, you need to decide on the style of wig that you’re looking for. This is more than just deciding if you need long hair or short — you can choose hair colors, hair textures, and even the material the wig is made with. When it comes to the style of your wig, these factors can make a difference in the cost of the wig, too, so if you’re choosing a long hair, lace-front wig made with human hair, you’ll need a larger budget than if you’re choosing a short-haired synthetic wig without a lace. Consider factors like how long you’ll wear the wig and if you’ll need to style or dye it to help you decide on the style.

Getting the Right Wig
Once you’ve decided on a style, you can find your wig! The Life of the Party has a wide range of wigs, ranging from human hair wigs to lace front wigs and so much more, so you can browse the wide selection online or in person. If you’re able to visit our store in person, you can see how the wig looks before you purchase it by browsing our selection in-store and even take it home the same day!

Caring for Your Wig
Once you’ve purchased your wig, you need to know how to care for it so you don’t damage it. Always be careful when brushing the hair so as not to pull out too many fibers. Many synthetic wigs are heat-sensitive so if you need the hair curled or styled be sure to do a strand test first!
To wash your wig, detangle the hair gently before washing using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Then, use a basin filled with cool water and no more than a capful of wig-specific shampoo to gently wash and rinse any sweat or product from the hair and cap. Once you’ve finished, you can rinse the wig, condition it by working a small amount through the strands before rinsing once more, and then let it air dry on a wig stand. If you must blow-dry your wig, do so using the lowest heat setting and be as gentle as possible.
Finally, be sure to use Wig Spray to keep your wig looking happy and healthy each time you wear it.

Storing Your Wig
Last, but not least is storing your wig. If you have the space to do so, you may want to leave your wigs on stands in order to help them keep their shape and styles. However, not many people have the space to do this, so your next best bet is to use the original packaging or a plastic zip bag. Before placing your wig in the bag, be sure that it’s completely dry and then use paper to fill in the wig cap to help it keep its shape. Seal the bag while squeezing out any additional air so that no residual air moisture or contaminants get in, and then keep the wig in a safe space where it will not be squished or damaged.
